Mindfulness in Mediation: Exploring the Role of Mediator Self-Awareness in Conflict Resolution
Keywords:
Mediation, Mindfulness, Mediator Competence, Self-Awareness, Dispute ResolutionAbstract
This study examines the professional and personal competencies expected of mediators in the mediation literature and discusses the conceptual contribution that mindfulness may offer to the development of these competencies. This study first examines the historical development of the concept of competence and the theoretical literature on mediator competence; it then discusses the role of self-awareness, attention, self-regulation, and emotional regulation in mediation practice. The findings indicate that technical knowledge and communication skills alone are insufficient for effective mediation; the mediator's cognitive, emotional, and psychological capacities also play a decisive role in professional effectiveness. The study further argues that mindfulness constitutes an interdisciplinary approach capable of supporting mediator competencies and demonstrates significant conceptual convergence with existing mediation models. Accordingly, it proposes a theoretical framework for integrating mindfulness into mediator education and professional development.
