Abstract

The study, aimed at understanding the experience of individuals with bipolar disorder in romantic relationships, employed a phenomenological design and utilized the interview technique within a qualitative research framework. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data. Through interpretation and inferences, a deep analysis was conducted. The research involved 6 individuals with bipolar disorder, aged 23-38, consisting of 4 women and 2 men, including 2 married and 4 in the dating phase, identified through purposeful sampling. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview form. Five themes emerged: Disruption of the need for emotional closeness, the therapeutic benefits of regular medication and psychotherapy, self-blame, the positive influence of a supportive partner, and coping with life's challenges. Challenges in emotion regulation and rising anxiety symptoms affect emotional intimacy and depression. A caring partner, along with regular medication and psychotherapy, positively impacts the relationship and disease course. Lastly, individuals tend to perceive themselves as guilty during conflicts.
